JLPT N4

How to say something is possible — “maybe / might.”

Meaning

“Might ~ / maybe ~.” Expresses possibility or uncertainty.

Formation

  • Verb / い-adj (plain) + かもしれない

  • な-adj / Noun (plain) + かもしれない

  • Polite: 〜かもしれません

Examples

明日は雨が降るかもしれない。

Ashita wa ame ga furu kamo shirenai. — It might rain tomorrow.

彼はもう帰ったかもしれません。

Kare wa mō kaetta kamo shiremasen. — He might have already gone home.

この店は高いかもしれない。

Kono mise wa takai kamo shirenai. — This shop might be expensive.

道が混んでいるかもしれない。

Michi ga konde iru kamo shirenai. — The roads might be crowded.

How it works

かもしれない shows real uncertainty (roughly 50/50 or less). It's weaker than 〜でしょう or 〜はず, which sound more confident. In casual speech it shrinks to 〜かも.

Compared with similar expressions

  • 〜かもしれない — might (uncertain, possible).

  • 〜でしょう — probably (fairly confident).

  • 〜はず — should (logical expectation).

Common mistakes

  • Attach to the plain form: 行く → 行くかもしれない

  • な-adj / Noun drop だ: 静か → 静かかもしれない (not 静かだかもしれない)

Related grammar

  • 〜でしょう — probably

  • 〜はず — should

  • 〜と思う — I think
