JLPT N4

How to say you've done something before — talking about experience.

Meaning

“Have (ever) done ~.” Describes life experience — whether something has happened at least once.

Formation

  • Verb (た-form) + ことがある

  • Negative: 〜たことがない

Examples

富士山[ふじさん]に登ったことがあります。

Fujisan ni nobotta koto ga arimasu. — I have climbed Mt. Fuji.

寿司を食べたことがない。

Sushi o tabeta koto ga nai. — I've never eaten sushi. (casual)

一度、日本で働いたことがある。

Ichido, Nihon de hataraita koto ga aru. — I've worked in Japan once.

この映画を見たことがありますか。

Kono eiga o mita koto ga arimasu ka. — Have you ever seen this movie?

How it works

This is for life experience, not a specific past event. For “I did it yesterday,” just use the plain past tense (食べた).

Add 一度も + a negative for “not even once”: 一度も行ったことがない.

Compared with similar expressions

  • 〜たことがある — have done before (experience).

  • Plain past (〜た) — did (at a specific time).

  • 〜たことがない — have never done.

Common mistakes

  • Use the た-form: ✗ 食べるたことがある → ✓ 食べたことがある

  • It's about experience, not recently completed actions.

Related grammar

  • 〜たら — if / when

  • 〜てみる — try doing

  • 〜ておく — do in advance
