JLPT N5

How Japanese な-adjectives work — the describing words that need な and だ.

Meaning

な-adjectives describe qualities (quiet, convenient, kind). They behave more like nouns: they need な before a noun, and だ / です to finish a sentence.

Conjugation

  • Present: 静かだ / 静かです — is quiet

  • Negative: 静かじゃない / 静かではない — is not quiet

  • Past: 静かだった / 静かでした — was quiet

  • Past negative: 静かじゃなかった / 静かではなかった — was not quiet

  • Before a noun: 静かな部屋 (shizuka na heya) — a quiet room

Examples

この町はとても静かだ。

Kono machi wa totemo shizuka da. — This town is very quiet.

駅前は便利じゃない。

Ekimae wa benri janai. — The area by the station isn't convenient.

昨日のパーティーはにぎやかでした。

Kinō no pātī wa nigiyaka deshita. — Yesterday's party was lively.

彼は親切な人です。

Kare wa shinsetsu na hito desu. — He is a kind person.

How it works

な-adjectives don't change their own ending; you change だ / です around them. The key habit: add な directly before a noun (静かな部屋), and だ / です at the end of a sentence.

A common trap: きれい (pretty), 嫌い (dislike), 有名 (famous), 元気 (well) look like い-adjectives but are な-adjectives — so it's きれいな花, not きれいい.

Compared with similar words

  • な-adjectives — need な before a noun; end with だ / です. Negative = じゃない.

  • い-adjectives — conjugate by changing 〜い (高い → 高くない).

  • Nouns — behave almost the same (学生だ, 学生じゃない).

Common mistakes

  • Don't drop な before a noun: ✗ 静か部屋 → ✓ 静かな部屋

  • Negative uses じゃない, not くない: ✗ 便利くない → ✓ 便利じゃない

  • きれい・嫌い are な-adjectives despite ending in い.
