〜ないことには (nai koto ni wa)

JLPT N2 Unless ~ first, nothing happens.
Meaning
“Unless ~ / without ~ first.” X is a required first step; without it, the rest is impossible. Followed by a negative.
Formation
Verb (ない-form) + ことには + (negative result)
Noun + でないことには
Examples
実際に見てみないことには、いいかどうか判断できない。
Jissai ni mite minai koto ni wa, ii ka dō ka handan dekinai. — Without actually seeing it first, I can't judge whether it's good.
やってみないことには、わからない。

予約しないことには、席は確保できない。
Yoyaku shinai koto ni wa, seki wa kakuho dekinai. — Without a reservation, you can't secure a seat.
How it works
X is presented as an essential precondition. The main clause must be negative — it says the desired thing can't happen without X.
It's stronger than 〜なければ: it stresses that nothing at all can proceed until X is done.
Compared with similar expressions
〜ないことには — “unless ~ first,” X is essential; clause is negative
〜なければ — “if not ~,” general condition
〜てからでないと — “not until after ~,” sequence-based condition
Common mistakes
The main clause must be negative (できない, わからない, etc.).
Use the ない-form: やってみないことには (not やってみることには).
