JLPT N2 It all depends on ~.

Meaning

“Depending on ~.” The outcome changes according to X.

Formation

Noun + 次第で(は) / 次第だ

Examples

明日の天気次第で、出発するかどうか決めます。

Ashita no tenki shidai de, shuppatsu suru ka dō ka kimemasu. — Depending on tomorrow's weather, I'll decide whether to leave.

努力次第で、結果は変わる。

Doryoku shidai de, kekka wa kawaru. — Depending on your effort, the result changes.

成功するかどうかは、あなたの準備次第だ。

Seikō suru ka dō ka wa, anata no junbi shidai da. — Whether you succeed depends on your preparation.

How it works

X is the deciding factor; the result varies with it. 〜次第だ at the end of a sentence means “it depends on X.”

Note: Verb (ます-stem) + 次第 is a different pattern meaning “as soon as ~” — don't mix them up.

Compared with similar expressions

  • Noun + 次第で — “depending on ~,” X decides the outcome

  • ます-stem + 次第 — “as soon as ~,” timing (different pattern)

  • 〜によって — “depending on / by means of,” varies with X

Common mistakes

  • Attach to a noun: 天気次第 (not 天気な次第).

  • Don't confuse 次第で (depending on) with ます-stem + 次第 (as soon as).

Related grammar

  • 〜によって — depending on, by

  • 〜ます次第 — as soon as ~

  • 〜たら — if / when
