How it works
With a dictionary-form verb, ために usually means purpose (“in order to”). With a noun or a past/fact, it often means cause (“because of”). For purpose, the action is normally within your control — compare with ように for results you can't directly control.
Compared with similar expressions
〜ために — in order to (controllable purpose) / because of.
〜ように — so that (uncontrollable results, potential / negative verbs).
〜おかげで / せいで — thanks to / because of (clear good / bad cause).
Common mistakes
Purpose ために takes a dictionary-form verb: 学ぶために (not 学んだために)
Noun needs の: 家族のために
Related grammar
〜ように — so that
〜おかげで — thanks to
〜せいで — because of (blame)
