JLPT N3

How to gently deny a conclusion someone might jump to — “it's not that ~.”

Meaning

“It's not (necessarily) that ~ / it doesn't mean ~.” Softly denies an assumption.

Formation

  • Verb / い-adj (plain) + わけではない

  • な-adj + な / Noun + の + わけではない

Examples

甘いものが嫌いなわけではない。ただ、控えているだけだ。

Amai mono ga kirai na wake dewa nai. Tada, hikaete iru dake da. — It's not that I dislike sweets — I'm just cutting back.

お金がないわけではないが、無駄遣いはしたくない。

Okane ga nai wake dewa nai ga, mudazukai wa shitakunai. — It's not that I have no money, but I don't want to waste it.

毎日運動しているわけではないが、健康には気をつけている。

Mainichi undō shite iru wake dewa nai ga, kenkō ni wa ki o tsukete iru. — It's not that I exercise daily, but I do watch my health.

全部理解できたわけではない。

Zenbu rikai dekita wake dewa nai. — It's not that I understood everything.

How it works

わけではない partially denies a natural conclusion — “don't misunderstand; it's not fully so.” It's softer than a flat 〜ない. Keep it apart from 〜わけがない and 〜わけにはいかない.

Compared with similar expressions

  • 〜わけではない — it's not (necessarily) that ~ (partial denial).

  • 〜わけがない — there's no way ~ (strong impossibility).

  • 〜わけにはいかない — can't (not permitted to).

Common mistakes

  • な-adj / Noun: 嫌い → 嫌いなわけではない, 学生 → 学生のわけではない

  • Different meaning from わけがない and わけにはいかない.

Related grammar

  • 〜わけがない — no way

  • 〜わけにはいかない — can't

  • 〜とは限らない — not necessarily
