How to say “about ~ / regarding ~” — naming the topic.

Meaning

“About ~ / concerning ~.” Marks the subject you're discussing, researching, or asking about.

Formation

Noun + について
Modifying a noun: Noun + についての + Noun

Examples

日本の歴史について、レポートを書いています。

Nihon no rekishi ni tsuite, repōto o kaite imasu. — I'm writing a report about Japanese history.

その事件について、詳しく教えてください。

Sono jiken ni tsuite, kuwashiku oshiete kudasai. — Please tell me in detail about that incident.

環境問題についての本を読んだ。

Kankyō mondai ni tsuite no hon o yonda. — I read a book about environmental issues.

将来の計画について、先生に相談した。

Shōrai no keikaku ni tsuite, sensei ni sōdan shita. — I consulted my teacher about my future plans.

How it works

について names the topic of discussion or study. To modify a following noun, use についての. に関して is a slightly more formal synonym.

Common mistakes

To modify a noun, add の: 〜についての話
について marks a topic, not a target of action (that's に / を).
