JLPT N3

How to say “the more ~, the more …” — two things changing together.

Meaning

“The more ~, the more ….” A proportional relationship between two changes.

Formation

  • Verb (ば-form) + Verb (dictionary) + ほど

  • い-adj: 〜ければ + 〜い + ほど

  • な-adj: 〜なら(ば) + な + ほど

Examples

練習すればするほど、上手になる。

Renshū sureba suru hodo, jōzu ni naru. — The more you practice, the better you get.

考えれば考えるほど、分からなくなる。

Kangaereba kangaeru hodo, wakaranaku naru. — The more I think, the less I understand.

給料は高ければ高いほどいい。

Kyūryō wa takakereba takai hodo ii. — The higher the salary, the better.

説明は簡単なら簡単なほどいい。

Setsumei wa kantan nara kantan na hodo ii. — The simpler the explanation, the better.

How it works

Repeat the same word in ば-form, then dictionary form, then add ほど. It shows that as one thing increases, another changes in step. With adjectives you can often shorten it in casual speech (高いほど…).

Compared with similar expressions

  • 〜ば〜ほど — the more ~, the more … (proportional).

  • 〜ほど — to the extent that ~ (degree).

  • 〜につれて — as ~ progresses (gradual change).

Common mistakes

  • Repeat the verb: 練習すればするほど (not 練習すればほど)

  • Irregulars: する → すればするほど, 来る → 来(く)れば来(く)るほど

Related grammar

  • 〜につれて — as ~ progresses

  • 〜ほど — to the extent

  • 〜ば — if
